1 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!
2 Serve the LORD with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!
3 Know that the LORD, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name!
5 For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.                    - Psalm 100:1-5 (ESV)
Dear Crosswalkers,
What a lovely time of the year to reflect on the goodness of God and the power of cultivating a grateful heart.
Psalm 100 is a magnificent poem of praise. Let me simply call your attention to v2 – Serve the Lord with gladness! This verse is a life-changer. Would you dedicate yourself to this great work? No matter what your age or station in life, no matter what your profession is or may be, serve the Lord with gladness. Make this your mission in life and you will have a great life. Serve the Lord alone is good, but add, with gladness, and it becomes transformational!
I’m grateful for the many blessings of being a part of a caring family of believers. One of our own, Bill Bolin, recently celebrated his 100th birthday with a drive-by parade outside his home. He is a veteran of WW2. How well I remember Bill’s faith story, that on the ship to Europe to fight in the war, a chaplain shared the love of Jesus with him. By the Lord’s good grace, Bill responded. He was in church every Sunday, as a 99-year-old man, until the pandemic hit.
I’m grateful to God for all of you! We all have a faith-story that is worthy of sharing with others.

As I look back on my life, I have so very much for which I am grateful. I have been blessed with a happy childhood, a wonderful wife and partner in ministry, and a truly great family, whom I love dearly. I thank God for ministry opportunities at home and overseas that have been way beyond my deserving. I have been blessed with a mind sharp enough to appreciate the great teachings of the Bible, and also sharp enough to know there is so much I don’t know! This is why I am a lifelong learner!
I have only four more messages to preach before my retirement. I trust there will be future opportunities, as the Lord wills.
I give thanks for the five church families, at home and abroad, I have been privileged to lead. I’m especially grateful for the last 22 years at Crosswalk. Each church family has been committed to learning God’s truth from the Scriptures, to missions, to family ministry, and to honoring the Lord with praise.
I hope you can join me this Thanksgiving season, despite the present hardships of the pandemic, in counting our many blessings.
Here are some powerful thanksgiving quotes:
The worst moment for the atheist is when he is really thankful and has nobody to thank. The converse of this proposition is also true… The great saint may be said to mix all his thoughts with thanks. All goods look better when they look like gifts… It is the highest and holiest of the paradoxes that the one who really knows he cannot pay his debt will be forever paying it… He will be always throwing things away into a bottomless pit of unfathomable thanks. - C. K. Chesterton
But the most obvious fact about praise—whether of God or anything—strangely escaped me…. I had never noticed that all enjoyment spontaneously overflows into praise…. The world rings with praise—lovers praising their (loved one), readers their favorite poet, walkers praising the countryside, players praising their favorite game… I think we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment; it is its appointed consummation. - C.S. Lewis
It is not happiness that makes us grateful. It’s gratefulness that makes us happy. - David Steindl-Rast
Many blessings,

Pastor John
