Dear Crosswalkers,

Tomorrow evening, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. we will be hosting our Community Trick or Treat event. There will be candy distributed at the classrooms, a gospel candy center, arts and crafts, lawn games, and food! This is a fun and safe environment for your kids to enjoy this strange holiday. I will be there in costume, if only you can recognize me! Invite your friends and I hope to see you there!

Here’s something that is not so fun and truly scary.

Last week the prestigious Pew Research Center released their recent survey of religion in America. The study bears the tell-all, yet sad title, In U.S., Decline of Christianity Continues at Rapid Pace.

The Religion News Service summarized the findings in this way: “The United States is steadily becoming less Christian and the number of people with no religion is rising. Those are the twin headlines from the latest Pew Research report… which shows a dramatic decline in American religious habits over the course of a decade.”

The study finds that two-thirds (65%) of Americans describe themselves as Christians, down from 77% in 2009. It also shows that the number of Americans who say they have no religion has risen to 26%, up from 17% a decade ago.

This is a sobering wake-up call.

This is a summons to resist the groundswell of secularism and irreligiosity our culture and take a stand for Jesus.

In describing the end times, Jesus said this:

Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come.         - Matthew 24:12-14 (NLT)

This is a call to faithfulness. Is your love growing cold? I can’t imagine anything scarier than that.

Our sermon series on REALLY BIG QUESTIONS was formulated to address this sad state of affairs. There are some persuasive logical, emotional, relational, and psychological reasons to resist our secular culture and embrace the way of Jesus. But the sad fact remains that many are resisting and rejecting those reasons in the rising tide of secularism.

Christine Emba, wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post entitled, Why millennials are skipping church and not going back. She writes this:

“Some of us are turning to convenient, low-commitment substitutes for faith and fellowship: astrology, the easy "spiritualism" of yoga and self-care, posting away on Twitter and playing more games… (But) What happens when sleeping, working and gaming more than our elders begins to make less sense? If we’re closing the church doors behind us, we’ll have to find somewhere else to tend to our spirits — and our hearts.”

It reminds me of the time when many of our Lord’s followers decided to no longer follow him. Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked if they want to leave as well. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68 NIV).

To whom shall we go indeed?

To Astrology?

To Yoga?

To Self-care?

Thank you, Crosswalkers, for your devotion to the Lord Jesus and his truth!! Our call is to fan the flames of our love for Jesus and each other, so they will never grow cold. Our call is to embrace the joyful task of making the Good News about the Kingdom of God known in our generation and to every nation.

Please pray with us as we resolve to shine ever more brightly with the truth of Jesus in an environment which is increasingly resistant to that light.

Many Blessings,

Pastor John
