Dear Crosswalkers,
One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could touch and bless them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him. When Jesus saw what was happening, he was angry with his disciples. He said to them, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children.                                                                                                  - Mark 10:13-14 (NLT)

Our Lord Jesus loves and welcomes children, and we should do the same! Our children’s ministry is a priority at Crosswalk. We want to bring more and more children to Jesus. That’s our Lord’s priority and his priority should be our priority. The Lord Jesus doesn’t want anyone or anything to hinder children from coming to him. He wants parents to bring children to him who are too young to come on their own. And he wants to bless the children. He wants them to grow up knowing and worshiping and serving the God who made them.
Why are children so receptive to the Lord? Because God made them to love him!  Note this: As a result of his statistical analysis over decades of research, George Barna has determined that for most children, what they believe at the age of 13 they will die believing. He wrote this: “If people do not embrace Jesus Christ as their Savior before they reach their teenage years, the chance of their doing so at all is slim.”

Are you shocked by that statement?

Now of course, the life changing power of the Holy Spirit can override these statistics. But the fact remains – Jesus is passionate about children coming to him because the childhood years are so formative. Again, Barna says this: “Having devoted …all of my professional skills to studying and working with ministries of all types, I am now convinced that the greatest hope for the local church lies in raising godly children.”
I am pleased that Crosswalk is taking great steps to supercharging our ministry to children. To begin with, it gives me great joy to announce that starting on October 1, Peggy Graves will be our new Pastor to Children and their Families! Peggy has served children for most of her life. From 2008 through 2015 she served here at Crosswalk as our Children’s Pastor. During the past 4 years she has enhanced her resume with dedicated service to children at other churches and at Redwood Christian Park.
She comes with a fresh perspective, new energy, and a knowledge of cutting edge (read “effective”) ministry to children and their families. One of her visions is for a new ministry center for children. It is a big dream, but it is something we are determined to bring to reality in the next few months. On top of that, we now have 18 Crosswalkers trained for ministry to children through SAFE GATHERINGS (a non-profit ministry dedicated to the safety and security of children and vulnerable youth and adults). And we have several more volunteers pending approval once they complete the program. In the next three months you can expect to see a glorious transformation of our ministry to the most receptive people group to the gospel, namely, children!
With joy,

Pastor John
