Dear Crosswalkers,

Greetings in the name of the Lord!

I want to share about one of the most important virtues of the Christian faith. It is called “perseverance” or “endurance.” The Lord Jesus said, But the one who endures to the end will be saved (Matthew 24:13 ESV). James, the brother of the Lord, wrote this: Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him (James 1:12 NIV).

We all struggle with our faith from time to time. That is actually a part of having a living relationship with God. But the key factor is always this: In your doubts and struggles, never give up hope; persevere in the faith, endure through the hard times.

Consider a young woman who tried to follow God with her life. She was utterly devoted to the Lord. But one day, as she walked the streets of the city she had just come to serve, she felt rejected by God. Her negative thoughts tempted her to turn her back on her calling. She felt unable to pray, desolate and alone. “They say people in hell suffer eternal pain because of loss of God,” she wrote. “In my soul, I feel just the terrible pain of loss, of God not wanting me, of God not being God, of God not really existing.”

The young woman was Mother Teresa.

She had her struggles, but she endured. She didn’t turn away from God. She persevered, with the Lord as her helper. Again, the Lord said, By your endurance you will gain your lives (Luke 21:19 ESV).

Of course, ultimately, the reason our love will not fail God is because God’s love will never fail us. We are only strong when we are strong in him. He endures in us, and so we can endure in him. Praise be to God!
