As I spent a week in the Dominican Republic, I noticed something; everyone I was in contact with was already a believer. Isn’t it weird then that we went? Isn’t it more odd that there are full time missionaries there and isn’t it even more peculiar that those missionaries invite so many teams each year?
We as believers are commissioned to spread the Gospel…or is it make disciples? …Are both the same? In the DR, I didn’t spread the Gospel and I was not there long enough to make any disciples.
Why did I go?
I went to see my family:
“My mother and my brothers are all those who hear Gods word and obey it.” – Luke 8:21 NLT
All of us make it a point to see family. For my direct family (Hernandez clan) it was difficult being in Paraguay during birthdays, during Thanksgiving and Christmas without family. Yet it is due to that time away that we were able to see Gods family in Paraguay and its what I saw in the DR: I saw one of my little sisters receive a dress for her birthday. I saw many of my little brothers playing basketball with a flat ball and being the older brother I am, I got them a much better ball. I met my extended family that lives in the DR and I embraced them.
Why did I go?
I went to share my resources with my family:
Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. – Galatians 6:10 NIV
As we arrived in the DR, our hosts there told the group not to drink the water because it was contaminated. Its weird but this kind of news made Linda Jackson smile. See Linda looks for opportunities to use the resource she has in providing clean filters. It’s a resource of great importance in the hands of God’s family. So on one special occasion, we went to a refugee area and introduced two households on how to use the filters.
Why did I go?
To share my passion of equipping prison ministers:
Why is it that he gives us these special abilities to do certain things best? It is that God’s people will be equipped to do better work for him, building up the Church, the body of Christ, to a position of strength and maturity. – Ephesians 4:12 TLB
It seems that I waited all week for my special gig. There was some confusion in regards to the timing of our arrival and some quick schedule changes were needed in order for me to get some time with prison ministers. I was able to speak to a small group of men and women and introduce my prison ministry resources. They allowed me to speak into them for about an hour and afterwards were very excited that I intended to leave them with those resources to use as they see fit. As we shared about the same passion, we felt the Father’s presence over us. It felt like a smile.
I believe our Father enjoys it when His sons and daughters get together. It was for this time to share with our brothers and sisters of the Dominican Republic that I went with Linda, Anne, Jamila and Malia. We shared meals, shared stories and also made some memories. We look forward to sharing with all of you more about the trip Sunday.
