Over four years ago Myrna Stevens, one of our Crosswalkers, was employed as a lunch monitor at Sunnyvale Middle School. The school was in walking distance to her home. It was her community school, her grandchildren attended there and so did some of the middle school students from her church. As she monitored lunch duty she began to interact and observe the students. Some of them sat alone without friends eating quietly. Some of them walked around angry and belligerent. Some of them just walked the quad hoping for acceptance. She saw the tremendous need that these students had to have a personal relationship with the One who would love them Unconditionally.
God gave her a burden for these lost teens. She began praying and claiming the school for God. As she walked all over the campus she prayed over every inch and every student that she came in contact with. It wasn’t long before she came up with a plan. As a long standing supporter of Youth for Christ/Campus Life she called me and we began to pray for a team. Last year God provided our church an open door to partner and facilitate a Campus Life Club at Sunnyvale Middle. What an answer to prayer!
As we start this second year at SMS, we already have over 40 students in only our third week of club. Pastor Gabe, myself and Mike Dwan are part of the weekly team that goes on campus to serve and bring the good news to the students at SMS. My favorite quote so far has been by a student who said “Can I go to this club? I am not a Christian yet, but I want to learn more about God.” Our reply was “Yes, this is exactly the place for you.”
Pray for us this year that we not only see students make decisions to follow Jesus but that we are able to connect some of the non churched youth into our youth group at Crosswalk.
What about you? Have you seen the need of people in your schools, neighborhood or family to have a personal relationship with God? Have you perhaps asked God to give you a burden for those who are lost without Him? As you pursue Him, he will give you a Plan. Perhaps it’s a neighborhood book club? Or bringing a meal to someone in need? Whatever the Plan, each of us can be doing something with our talents to reach those in our circle of influence.
Let’s remember the passage in Isaiah 52:7 – “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion your God reigns!”
God, give us eyes to see past our own issues, a burden for the lost and a creative plan to introduce the lost to You! Amen!
